Commercial intent

Who they are matters. What they're trying to do can matter more.

Commercial intent targeting is the idea B2B.ID Ads is built around: an ad is worth showing when a business has a current reason to care, not merely when its profile matches your ideal customer description.

The gap

Firmographics describe a business. They don't describe a moment.

Perfect fit, wrong week

The industry matched. The size matched. The region matched. The business had nothing it was trying to solve that your offer touches, so the impression was spent on someone with no reason to respond.

Ordinary fit, right moment

The business is in the middle of something your offer is directly relevant to. Same spend, different outcome — because context, not only identity, decided who saw it.

Where it sits

Context is stage two

  1. Target

    Audience

Choose the businesses a campaign should reach.

  2. Context

    Business context

Narrow to the supported commercial context that makes the offer useful.

  3. Place

    Eligible placement

Select a placement from available B2B.ID advertising inventory.

  4. Deliver

    Impression

The campaign runs and delivery is recorded.

  5. Engage

    Click / action

A business clicks through to the destination you chose.

  6. Attribute

    Outcome

Connected to an outcome where B2B.ID has the evidence.

Audience decides who is eligible. Context decides who is worth reaching. Placement decides where it appears.

Boundaries

What commercial intent targeting is not

It is not a prediction that a business will buy.

It is not third-party intent data scraped from the web.

It is not behavioural retargeting or a lookalike pool.

It is not a promise of leads, meetings or revenue.

Only context types the platform currently supports for ad targeting can be selected. The campaign builder is authoritative; this page describes the concept, not a fixed catalogue.

In practice

A context-relevant ad reads differently

When the context is right, the creative can speak to the thing the business is actually working on — and the Sponsored label costs you nothing, because the message earns the read.

FAQ

Commercial intent, answered

Is commercial intent the same as buyer intent data?

No. Intent-data products infer purchase readiness from browsing and content signals across the web. B2B.ID uses commercial context that exists inside the platform and is supported for targeting. It makes an audience more relevant; it does not claim to know a business is about to buy.

Does B2B.ID track businesses across the internet to build this?

No. Commercial context comes from the platform's own supported context types, not from third-party web tracking or behavioural pools.

Which context types can I target?

The campaign builder is the source of truth. Context that exists elsewhere in B2B.ID is not automatically available as ad targeting, so we don't publish a fixed list here that could go stale.

Will commercial intent targeting always shrink my audience?

Usually yes, and that's the point. A smaller audience with a live reason to care is generally worth more than a larger one without.

Can I run a campaign without commercial context?

Audience targeting works on its own. Adding supported context is how you move from reaching the right kind of business to reaching it at a moment where the offer makes sense.
